What this Application Does
The Solaris Bank Lister utility is a software application that creates a text file listing of the preset names encoded into a bank of the program data files used by the Solaris synthesizer from John Bowen Synth Design.
Why Use this Application
The Solaris synthesizer was specifically designed to provide an unprecented degree of deep sound programming to synthesists and sound designers. The preset names that appear in the main display screen of the Solaris synthesizer are important to help visually identify and distinguish among the many different programmed sounds that are stored in the Solaris program data files on the Compact Flash (CF) card plugged into the back of the instrument.
These preset names are encoded into the specific file format of the Solaris program data files and are ordinarily only seen when browsing the contents of the Compact Flash (CF) card with the synthesizer itself. All the hundreds of Solaris program data files spread across multiple banks (i.e., the containing folders) of the Compact Flash (CF) card, are otherwise opaque when it comes to their corresponding preset names since the files only expose obtuse names (e.g., p0.pre, p1.pre, p2.pre, etc.).
The Solaris Bank Lister is a simple utility application that can quickly generate a text file listing the preset name for each Solaris program data file within a bank (i.e., the containing folder). The ability to see all of these preset names at a glance (in preset numbering order), can be beneficial when it comes to organizing and managing the many Solaris program data files .
How to Use this Application
Copy the Solaris program data files from the Compact Flash (CF) card to your computer. You can find the various banks of these located within the Presets folder of the Compact Flash (CF) card. It would probably be a good idea to also make another copy of this data as a safety back-up before you begin using the Solaris Bank Lister utility application.
Start the Solaris Bank Lister utility application.
In the application's multi-column view of your computer storage, navigate to a folder containing Solaris program data files that you previously copied from the Compact Flash (CF) card. When you have such a folder selected, you will see Solaris program data files (with a .pre file extension) in the next column over to the right.
To create a text file with the listing of the Solaris preset names for each program data file in the selected bank (i.e., the containing folder), select the Export Bank List button under the multi-column view.
A new text file named SE_banklist.txt will now be created in the same selected folder. This new text file will not appear in the multi-column view in the Solaris Bank Lister utility application. You will need to use a regular Finder window to see the new text file that was just created. Selecting the new SE__banklist.txt file in a Finder window in Columns view mode will preview the file contents with the Solaris preset names listing in the next column over to the right.
If the selected folder already contains a text file named SE_banklist.txt, it will be over-written automatically with the new Solaris preset names listing when you select the Export Bank List button. No warning or confirmation window will be displayed.
Continue navigating to other folders containing banks of Solaris program data files in the multi-column view and creating text files with the listing of the Solaris preset names.
When you have finished creating the text file listings of the Solaris preset names, exit the application.
