Daya Wheel doing unexpected things

Post by Kamil Peteraj »

Hi all, i searched the formum for someone with a similar problem but ni luck.
I am having issues with strange behavior caused by my data wheel - unrelated parameters get changed. It is always the same thing in the same exact manner and order: I turn the Filter Freq encoder so it is displayed as the "last parameter" in the central screen. I then turn thr data wheel which should adjust thr Filter Freq. Instead, first my Octave jumps down, one step, FX button light goes off, Undo light goes off, Enable Parts 2&3 light up, Clock Sync in LFOs lights up. As I continue to turn, the Solaris then moves one patch up. As I continue turning, again Octave, FX, Undo, Enable Parts 2&3, Clock Sync, then patch jumps etc.
This happens after several calibrations, reboots, OS update to the latest 1.3.1 etc.
This was present before and I thought it was an OS bug that would be resolved by an OS update but definitely not the case.
Any suggestions? I bought the unit second hand so no clue when or how this started... thanx
EDIT: the Filter Freq is an example - it happens with any parameter I try to adjust with the Data Wheel.

Hi Kamil - here’s the same response I posted in the other bug report:

Hmmmm....I believe the old problem had to do with a MIDI loop happening in the Solaris. This was changed a few years ago, but things are so much better with the current v1.3.1 OS, which I assume you have installed now?

Unfortunately, the things you are describing sound like a hardware issue. I definitely don’t see this kind of behavior, nor have any others reported such to me. Are you seeing these things with the Solaris itself - not connected to anything MIDI?

Yes thats correct - just the Solaris by itself. I was afraid it would be hardware related. Any suggestions for what the culprit could be?

I went ahead and looked inside thr Solaris. I had no clue what I was looking for - I was kind of hoping for a loose ribbon cable or something. Unfortunately nothing. All seems just fine. With the exception of a piece of electrical tape that was holding some cables against a PCB - the tape peeled off and left some whiteish/yellowy residue on the PCB. Could this have become conductive and be causing a short/misfiring? Its on the opposite side of the jog wheel right above the joystick.
I made sure all the ribbon cables are properly attached. After reassembly the problem persists.
Btw the jog wheel passes the diagnostics everytime. So its probably not the wheel itself.

I wouldn’t expect the residue to impact things, but I’m not a PCB specialist. The evidence as you describe points to a data line being affected somewhere, as all the switches and encoders are scanned repeatedly, and you are indicating that something is awry in the data bus that is carrying the data wheel, Octave switches, Undo and FX button, etc. since there is interaction with these. It could be on one of the front panel boards, or the main display board itself (which handles all of the displays, plus the wheels, joystick, and foot pedals).

I think it would require a board-by-board replacement to discover where the problem lies.
